a letter from vigs
moving away shouldn’t mean drifting apart.
hey, i’m vigs.
there’s a particular kind of happiness in knowing the small things about someone. what they’re making for dinner. how that awkward date went. the story they’re halfway through telling when you both start laughing.
the stuff that never makes it into a “big life update”.
a few years ago, i moved from the US to Germany. i was excited for a new chapter. i also missed my friends.
i tried keeping up on social media. somehow, i ended up knowing more about strangers than the people i loved. calls meant finding a time across busy lives and inconvenient time zones. “let’s catch up soon” started doing a lot of heavy lifting.
we have apps that can keep us watching strangers for hours. surely we can build something that helps us find ten minutes for a close fwnd.
i don’t want to accept that growing older, moving cities, or starting a new chapter means quietly losing touch with the people who made the last one matter.
i want us to stay part of each other’s ordinary days. to know enough to ask “how did it go?” to call when there’s a little time. to send a rambling update without wondering whether it’s interesting enough to post.
that’s why i’m making fwnds. a small, private place for the people you already care about, with a little less friction between thinking of someone and being there for them.
no audience to impress. no algorithm deciding whose life you see. and no ai standing in for you. we believe ai has no place in human connection.
an app can’t do the caring for us. that part is ours. but it can make it a little easier to show up.
i hope fwnds helps someone you miss feel a little more like someone you saw yesterday.
